We started off inside where Ms. Mary taught us some interesting things about the animals that live in our local habitats. We're sure your children can probably remember some facts they heard today about these creatures. The baby birds in the top picture can only do 2 things...
There is something special about the spots on this guys back, and he has a very different way of swallowing his food (it has to do with his eyeballs)...
This is a female. How do we know?
We also played some games...
We saw many of the things that have been collected over the years at Ojibway. We learned to leave things in nature and not pick up anything outside to bring home, as tempting as it might be...
Then we headed outside for our walk. We listened to Ms. Mary make the sounds of the Catbird (meow), the Chickadee (chickadeedeedee) and the Eastern Towhee (drink your tea)...
Then we headed out to the Savanna Loop trail...
If you look closely, you can see a deer on the left behind the post. It came very, very close to us before walking away into the woods...
One friend pointed out a tree he found especially interesting...
We stopped to talk about the oak tree...
And another friend thought this branch looked like a crocodile...
This tree has poison ivy growing up it...
One big tree had fallen right down...
This patch of mud was several friends' favourite part of our field trip!
We had a special visit from a beautiful goose who seemed very interested in us...
This is part of a branch. There's a fly about to hatch out of it!
The goose didn't want to say goodbye! She followed us to the end of our walk! When we got back, we got to see a pretty fox snake named Foxy. We even got to pet her!
"I liked the turtle in the water. He was just laying in the water. I liked him 'cause he was little."
"I like the snake and the turtle. That's because they're cool."
"I liked feeling the snake. It feeled like a teddy bear."
"I liked the mud because it was squishy so much."
"I liked the snapping turtle because it snaps. It likes to snap bugs."
"I liked the coyote made up like a statue because I thought his feet was gonna move and marche like this."
"I liked the deer because it was making deer tracks."
What a wonderful day of fun and learning!
